Spreyton Fresh: A Legacy of Innovation in Tasmanian Agriculture

Spreyton Fresh, a family-run business in the scenic Mersey Valley of Tasmania, has been a beacon of agricultural excellence for five generations. Since planting their first apple trees in the late 1800s, Spreyton Fresh has evolved into a modern farm embracing regenerative agriculture practices to ensure sustainable farming and soil health, aiming to leave the soil in better condition for future generations.

In 2004, Spreyton Fresh began focusing on soil health, minimising synthetic chemical use, and employing organic inputs like humates, fulvic acid, kelp, fish, worm leachate, and natural compost to become carbon neutral.

Over the last three decades, Spreyton Fresh has diversified its product range, leading to the creation of the Spreyton Cider Company in 2012. Initially producing traditional ciders, the company expanded to include contemporary and flavoured ciders, zesty ginger beer, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, catering to diverse markets.

The recent expansion of their cellar door in 2023 transformed it into a destination venue offering cider and juice tastings, a café, a kids' playground, and orchard walks. The cellar door, set amidst working orchards, also hosts private functions and events, blending agritourism with Tasmanian hospitality.

Spreyton Fresh's dedication to quality and innovation has been recognised with numerous awards, including the 2021 Australian Cider Awards' Best Large Producer trophy. Their cider brand, Spreyton Cider, has gained international acclaim, winning medals at global competitions such as the Japan Cider Cup.

Focusing on both domestic and export markets, Spreyton Fresh continues to grow, producing 3,000-4,000 bins of apples and around 100 tonnes of cherries annually. Their long-term vision includes further expanding their cider manufacturing while maintaining apple and cherry production.

At its core, Spreyton Fresh is a testament to the power of family legacy, innovation, and a deep connection to the land. With a rich history and a forward-looking approach, Spreyton Fresh remains a cornerstone of Tasmanian agriculture, offering products that embody their heritage and commitment to sustainability.
